FAQ
The questions we hear most, before people join and after. If yours isn't here, message us directly and we'll answer it ourselves.
Getting started
A community where members take each other in for free. You open your home and show someone your part of the world, and in return, you get to go stay with people anywhere else, for free too. It's not a hotel booking and it's not just a couch to crash on. Your adopter spends time with you, shows you around, and plans things to do together, so you leave with a new friend, not just a place you slept.
We'd argue it's safer than plenty of things people do without a second thought. You get in a stranger's car for an Uber. You book an Airbnb from someone you've never spoken to. You go on a first date with someone who isn't ID verified and you know almost nothing about. On Adopted Adults, every member has to verify their government ID and pass a quick liveness check before they can confirm a stay, so you know exactly who you're dealing with. And you can't just book a spot and show up like a hotel. You chat with your adopter first, right here in the app, then hop on a video call together before anything is locked in. By the time you actually stay somewhere, you've talked, seen each other's face, and decided you actually want to. Nate, one of our cofounders, stayed with a member named Aruna in Bristol not long ago. They chatted for about a week getting to know each other, then did a 20-minute video call where Aruna walked him through the house and what they'd do together. Only once it felt like they were already friends did he confirm the stay. That's the bar here, not a stranger with a key.
Couchsurfing could be incredible when someone really took you in, cooked for you, showed you around. But that only happened if you got lucky. Most of the time it was just a free bed. Here, that part isn't luck, it's the whole point. Every adoption comes with a plan for what you'll do together built in, not just a place to sleep, and everyone who visits also adopts someone in return, so it stays full of people who genuinely want to do this, not just people looking for a free night's sleep.
Yes, staying with someone is always free. That never changes, for anyone, ever. The app itself is also free forever for our first 1,000 members, no matter what we build or charge down the road. After that, running this costs money, so new members who join after those first 1,000 may see a small monthly fee, somewhere around $20, to help cover it. If you're one of the first 1,000, you're locked in free for good.
No. You do need to always have a live adoption of your own, since that's what keeps this fair for everyone, which basically means you have to always be willing to adopt. But you're never forced to say yes to anyone you're not genuinely excited about. You choose who stays with you, every single time.
The obvious reason: you get to travel anywhere in the world for free. That's true, and it's a great perk. But honestly, it's not why most of our community does this. The bigger reason is you get to plan your ideal weekend, week, or trip around exactly what you love, and know that whoever signs up for it already wants that too. Finding friends who are into the same things you are, whether that's coffee, hiking, board games, whatever your thing is, is genuinely hard as an adult. Adopting lets you build the exact hangout you wish you had, and the person who shows up already wants what you're offering.
Then this probably isn't the right fit. Everyone who visits someone also adopts someone else in return. That's what keeps every stay free and keeps things fair for the whole community.
Adoptions
An actual plan for what you'd do with a guest, not just a room for rent. Andrea's adoption is "Surf Lessons and Hammocking in Costa Rica," where she teaches guests to surf, takes them on her favorite hikes, and shows them her town. Whatever you'd actually do if a friend came to visit, that's your adoption.
Photos of you doing the thing are great if you have them, but not required. Photos of your home should never look staged, like a rental listing, just tidy up and snap a few. You do need one clear photo of where your guest will actually sleep, but that doesn't have to be a spare bedroom. A pull-out couch or an air mattress is completely normal here.
Yes. Each one is its own plan, so you can offer a few and see what people are drawn to.
Anytime, as often as you want. Nothing about your first version has to be perfect, you can always come back and make it better.
Safety
Safety is the whole company here, not a feature we added on. Every member must verify their identity with a government ID and a quick liveness check before they can confirm a stay. We strongly recommend a video call before any stay too, since talking face to face is the best filter there is. Reviews from both sides stay hidden until both are in, so nobody can fake a perfect profile. Messages stay in the app until a stay is confirmed. And it's one strike: any safety violation means removal, no warnings, and a removed member can't quietly make a new account.
It's how other members know who they're actually dealing with, and adopters see your verified badge before deciding. You'll need it to confirm any stay.
Report or block anyone in one tap, anytime. Local emergency info is right there during a stay. We respond fast to every report we get.
Yes. Neither side sees the other's review until both are submitted, so there's no retaliation and no way to fake a spotless record.
Membership
If you're one of the first 1,000 members to publish an adoption, the app is free for you forever, even if we add a membership fee for people who join after. You're locked in free for good, no matter what we build or charge later.
Your exact address is never shown until a stay is confirmed. Your full legal name and birthdate are never public.
Adopting & visiting
Open an adoption you like and send a message. You'll need your own adoption published first, since visiting someone means you're also willing to adopt.
We're brand new and growing every day, so it happens sometimes. It's not personal, people just haven't seen it yet. Try a few different adoptions.
Message your adopter or guest as soon as you know. Repeated last-minute cancellations affect your standing here, the same way they would with a friend.
We are a bit picky with who we accept. This is the most rewarding, affordable way to travel, and we only want the greatest hosts in the world. Everyone must follow our golden rule: host how you want to be hosted.
