Cancellation Policy

Last updated June 28, 2026

Plans change, and sometimes a confirmed stay has to be cancelled. This policy explains how cancellations work and how they affect your standing in the community.

1. Two ways to cancel

There are two ways to cancel a confirmed stay, and they are treated very differently: requesting a mutual cancellation, or cancelling now. Whenever possible, request a mutual cancellation, it is the kindest option and carries no penalty for anyone.

2. Request to cancel (mutual)

You can ask the other person to agree to cancel. If you both agree, it is a mutual cancellation: the dates free up for each of you and there is no penalty for either party. This is the recommended way to cancel whenever you have the time to coordinate.

3. Cancel now (one-sided)

Cancelling now is a one-sided cancellation that takes effect immediately. It frees the dates, but because a last-minute, one-sided cancellation can leave the other person stranded, it is reviewed by a member of our team and may affect your standing.

4. Reasons that carry no penalty

Some one-sided cancellations carry no penalty, including when you feel unsafe, when there is a genuine emergency, or when travel falls through for reasons outside your control. Cancelling repeatedly for weak reasons, or with no reason, can affect your standing and may ultimately lead to removal from the community.

5. Safety cancellations

If you block or report the other person during a confirmed stay, the stay is cancelled automatically for safety. This is always treated as having a valid reason, so there is no penalty to you, and our team is notified.

6. Cancel early and communicate

Whatever the reason, cancel as early as you can and let the other person know in the chat. Hosting works because people show up for each other.
